Emma's Garden Sugar Paste

A sweet, almond scented scrub loaded with botanicals.

This scrub was inspired by the almost forgotten days sitting in my grandmother’s garden. It’s sweet smell and natural botanicals are reminiscent of time spent catching glimpses of butterflies, sipping sweet tea, and literally stopping to smell the flowers.

Filled with emollients, nourishing oils, and natural herbs, this scrub forms a luxurious, non-greasy paste that leaves skin feeling refreshed and hydrated. While this product will not be as oily as other oil-based skincare products, you should still use caution to avoid slipping when exiting the tub/shower.

To use: take a small amount to start and rub gently across your body after cleansing, avoiding the face and other sensitive areas*. Wash off with warm to hot water. We recommend using a drain strainer to catch any solids that may go down your drain, though this is not absolutely necessary with this product as minimal solid parts are included. Finish with body oil to lock in moisture.

* This product can be used on the face, just wash before and after use and top with moisturizer.

Let’s get started!

There are three stages for this recipe: heated, cool down, and cool. The ingredients are listed in order of each phase as it’s important to pay attention to what happens when.

Tips:

  • Measure out ingredients first, then separate them by phase.
  • A double-boiler, bain-marie, or a homemade verison (a glass boil over a pot of water) is necessary so the heated ingredients don’t cook or burn.
  • Powdered herbs are more drain and skin friendly while whole herbs will exfolliant better.
  • While this is self-preserving, there are no true preservatives in this recipe. Without contact with water this product will last 6 months. Once opened and water is introduced to the container, it is best to use it within a month or two.
Ingredients for Emma's Garden Scub sit on a counter surrounded by green plants.

Equipment

  • Bain-marie or homemade version
  • Glass container for mixing (products will be hot so not plastic!)
  • Silicone spatula or item to stir ingredients
  • Immersion blender (any blender will do, but it will get messy and harder to transfer if using traditional blender.)
  • Containers for finished product

Ingredients

Heated Phase

9%           Emulsifying wax

10%         Calendula infused safflower oil

11%         Cetearyl Alcohol

Room Temp Phase

.025%         Vitamin E

1%               Herbs- dried, crushed rose and calendula

Instructions

Heated Phase

Melt all ingredients from the heated phase in a double boiler. Keep the water at a low simmer to avoid cooking or burning the ingredients. Stir occasionally at first, then constantly once solids begin to melt. This should take around 20 minutes.

Be sure to make sure ALL ingredients are fully melted/liquid to avoid clumping and ensure smooth application.

Cool Down Phase

Remove from heat

Mix in sugar well

Freeze for 5 minutes

Whip for at around 3 minutes

Room Temp Phase

Add the last of the ingredients and whip one last time.

At the end of the day…

Play around with different ratios, herbal-infused oils, and exfolliants. If you want to make a scrub with ingredients in your home, try making a simple mix of olive oil and sugar/salt for a quick skin refresher.
